“In Myanmar we have seen for the past
several days monks able to protest
pretty much unmolested by the state.
This raises some very poignant questions
about why monks, who are ordinary
citizens, are allowed to protest where
no one else is able. Is it that monks
have rights that others don’t? The
answer would in this case have to be
“yes”. Why? The answer is mainly
cultural as monks are held in high
esteem by religious Burmese. The
practical among the police and military
know that to stand against monks could
very well hasten their own downfall.
But the answer is definitely not
morality as there would be few causes
more just than those whose standard
bearer, Aun San Suu Kyi, has spent so
long being detained. Although the
police let the monks pass where others
couldn’t I say let it happen. This may
well be the foot in the door that the
democratic minded of the Burmese have
been waiting for so long!”
